3-27. FUEL INJECTION PUMP.
Diesel fuel and cleaning solvent are flammable and toxic to eyes, skin, and respiratory tract.
Skin/eye protection required. Avoid repeated/prolonged contact to prevent serious Injury and
death. Good general ventilation is normally adequate.
Always use two wrenches when removing/installing fittings and/or fuel lines to avoid damage.
Never steam clean or pour cold water on a fuel injection pump while pump is running or while it
is warm. Doing so may cause seizure of internal rotating pump parts.
Catch fuel in suitable container.
If not removed, disconnect electrical leads to fuel injection pump.
Clean fuel injection pump, lines,, and area around pump with dry cleaning solvent (P-D-680) or a steam cleaner.
Using center bolt on harmonic balancer, rotate crankshaft until No. 1 piston is at TDC on compression stroke.
The injection pump can be removed without engine being positioned at No. 1 TDC, however, this
aids installation if pump position is not changed.
Remove timing hole cover plate from side of fuel injection pump housing and check timing marks.
If there is a mark on cam ring and governor weight retainer, proceed with removal.
If there is no mark on governor weight retainer, scribe a mark on weight retainer (front mark) directly in line with
mark on cam ring (rear mark).
Remove capscrew from left side of flywheel housing to gain access to timing hole in flywheel and insert locking
pin (JDE-81-4), refer to FIGURE 3-42.
