ARMY TM 9-2815-255-24 AIR FORCE TO 38G1-95-2 MARINE CORPS TM 2815-24/4 b. Using a dial indicator, measure backlash between timing gears.  Specification given is for new parts. (1) Camshaft to upper idler 0.003 to 0.014 inch (0.07 to 0.35 mm). (2) Injection pump to upper idler 0.003 to 0.014 inch (0.07 to 0.35 mm) (3) Upper idler to crankshaft 0.003 to 0.012 inch (0.07 to 0.30 mm). (4) Crankshaft to lower idler 0.003 to 0.014 inch (0.07 to 0.35 mm). (5) Balancer shaft to oil pump 0.002 to 0.014 inch (0.05 to 0.35 mm) (6) Oil pump to lower idler 0.0016 to 0.015 inch (0.04 to 0.36 mm). (7) Lower idler to balancer shaft 0.002 to 0.016 inch (0.05 to 0.40 mm). (8) If backlash is not within specification, install new gears. c. Measure sleeve bearing ID.  New part ID is 1.751 to 1.753 inches (44.47 to 44.54 mm). d. Measure shaft OD.  New part OD is 1.750 to 1.751 inches (44.44 to 44.47 mm). e. Oil clearance (sleeve bearing ID to shaft OD) should be 0.001 to 0.004 inch (0.02 to 0.10 mm).  Maximum wear limit is 0.006 inch (0.15 mm).  If oil clearance exceeds limit, replace worn parts. 342.3.  Installation. a. Install spring pins (6 and 16, FIGURE 3-115) with end of pin protruding as shown in FIGURE 3-116. b. Install upper thrust washer (7, FIGURE 3-115) and idler gear shaft (5) with spring pin (6) in notch.  Drive shaft into front plate until thrust washer (7) is fully seated with oil hole facing up. c. Install lower thrust washer (9) and idler gear shaft (15) with spring pin (16) in notch.  Drive shaft into front plate until thrust washer (9) is fully seated with oil hole facing up.  Install capscrew (13) and washer (14) through rear of front plate and tighten capscrew to 70 ft-lbs (90 Nm). FIGURE 3-116.  Spring Pin Protrusion CAUTION Upper and lower idler gear sleeve bearings (4 and 12, FIGURE 3-115) have the same ID, but are different.  Sleeve bearing with spiral oil groove goes in lower idler gear.  Sleeve bearing without groove goes in upper idler gear (pressure lubed).  Do not intermix sleeve bearings or premature sleeve bearing failure will result.
