Step 6. Check for defective turbocharger.
a.
Inspect turbocharger for damage. Refer to paragraph 3-13.2. If not defective,
do step 7.

Replace defective turbocharger. Refer to paragraph 3-13.
Step 7. Check for valves improperly adjusted.
a.
Adjust valves. Refer to paragraph 3-32.1.
b.
Do step 8.
Step 8. Check for low engine compression.
a.
Perform engine compression check. Refer to paragraph 3-5.
b.
If defective, repair or replace engine.
11. BLACK OR GRAY SMOKE
Step 1. Check for blocked air intake system.
Remove blockage as found. If no blockage is found, do step 2.
Step 2. Check for defective fuel injectors.
a.
Test fuel injectors. Refer to paragraph 3-29.3. If not defective, do step 3.
b.
Replace fuel injectors. Refer to paragraph 3-29.
Step 3. Check for improper fuel injection timing.
Adjust fuel injection timing. Refer to paragraph 3-28. Go to step 4.
