ARMY TM 9-2815-256-24 AIR FORCE TO 38G1-96-2 MARINE CORPS TM 2815-24/5 Section XII.  CAMSHAFT ASSEMBLY MAINTENANCE 3-40.  CAMSHAFT. 3-40.1.  Removal. NOTE Measuring valve lift can give an indication of wear on cam lobes or cam followers. a. Measure valve lift, refer to paragraph 3-32.2. b. Remove rocker arm assembly and pushrods, refer to paragraph 3-33.1. c. Remove timing gear cover, refer to paragraph 3-39.1. d. Measure camshaft end play, refer to paragraph 3-40.2. e. When removing camshaft (3, FIGURE 3-128) with engine on rollover stand, roll engine to a horizontal position with oil pan side up. NOTE It is not necessary to remove cylinder head to remove camshaft.  If camshaft lobes show excessive wear, then cylinder head should be removed so cam followers (2) can be removed for inspection. f. Remove fuel supply pump, refer to paragraph 3-25.1. g. Turn crankshaft until capscrews (1) can be removed through holes in gear (5). h. Remove two capscrews (1). CAUTION Do   not   allow   camshaft   lobes   to   drag   on   cylinder   block   honed   bore   surfaces   while   removing camshaft. 3-168
