Check for defective thermostat. a. If thermostat is suspected of being defective, replace thermostat.  Refer to paragraph 3-9. b. If engine continues to overheat, do step 3. Step 3. Check for defective water pump. a. Remove and check water pump for damage, refer to paragraphs 3-10.1. and 3-10.2. If not defective, do step 4. b. Replace defective water pump.  Refer to paragraph 3-10. Step 4. Check improper fuel injection pump timing. Adjust fuel injection pump timing.  Refer to paragraph 3-28. 8.  EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. Step 1. Check for oil leakage. a. Inspect engine for oil leaks.  If no leaks, do step 2. b. Repair or replace defective components. Step 2. Check for blocked air intake system. Remove blockage as found.  If not blockage, do step 3. Step 3. Check for defective intake or exhaust valve seals or valve guides. a. Repair or replace defective components.  Refer to paragraph 3-33. b. Disassemble  and  inspect  valve  seals  and  guides.    Refer  to  paragraphs  3-33.3.  and  3-33.4.  If  not defective, replace engine. 3-7
