Section VII. PREPARATION FOR SHIPMENT AND STORAGE
3-20. GENERAL.
This section provides instructions for short term and immediate storage, or shipment, of the engine
assembly.
3-21. ADMINISTRATIVE STORAGE.
Administrative storage shall be in accordance with AR 750-1.
3-22. SHORT TERM STORAGE (30 days or less).
a. Check engine oil level and service as required.
b. Cap all disconnected fuel lines.
c. Conduct a general inspection of the engine assembly to ensure all components are present and
securely fastened.
d. Store the engine on a level surface in an area protected from the elements. Cover as required
depending upon weather conditions.
3-23. INTERMEDIATE TERM STORAGE (more than 30 days)
a. Start the engine and allow it to operate for 3 minutes. Shut down engine.
b. Drain engine oil while engine is still warm in accordance with Paragraph 3-5.
c. Fill engine crankcase with fresh oil in accordance with Paragraph 3-6.
d. Remove head cover (Para. 3-15). Add 2 cubic centimeters (cc) of engine oil to the cylinder head, then
reinstall head cover.
e. Locate decompression lever on head cover. Push decompression lever down and hold in position
while you pull the recoil starter handle 3 times. Do not pull hard enough to start engine.
f. Pull decompression lever up. Slowly pull the recoil starter handle until it feels tight. This closes the
intake and exhaust valves in compression position and helps prevent rust from forming.
g. Conduct a general inspection of the engine assembly to ensure all components are present and
securely fastened.
h. Store the engine on a level surface in an area protected from the elements. Cover as required
depending upon weather conditions.
