Do not allow camshaft lobes to drag on engine block honed bore surfaces while Installing
camshaft. Machine surfaces may become scratched or scored. Revolve camshaft during
installation to avoid obstruction in any bore.
Put clean engine lubricating oil (MIL-L-2104) on camshaft bearing journals.
Install camshaft (3) and thrust plate (4) in engine block.
Install two capscrews (1) and tighten to 35 ft-lbs (47 Nm).
Time camshaft as follows:
If not removed, remove upper idler gear, refer to paragraph 3-42.1.
With timing tool (JD-254) resting on nose of crankshaft, turn camshaft (3) until timing mark aligns with
center of camshaft gear (5), refer to FIGURE 3-113.
Check injection pump gear timing with timing tool (JD-254). Timing mark with 4" beside it, must align with
center of injection pump gear.
Use the timing mark corresponding to the number of cylinders.
Install upper idler gear (3, FIGURE 3-115) on is shaft without turning camshaft gear (5) or injection pump
Install washer (2) so hole and spring pin align. Install capscrew (1). Tighten capscrew (1) to 65 ft-lbs (90

Recheck gear timing to make sure it is still correct.
Install timing gear cover, refer to paragraph 3-39.3.
Install rocker arm assembly and pushrods, refer to paragraph 3-33.5.
Install fuel supply pump, paragraph 3-25.3.
