ARMY TM 9-2815-255-24 AIR FORCE TO 38G1-95-2 MARINE CORPS TM 2815-24/4 3-27.  FUEL INJECTION PUMP. 3-27.1.  Removal. Warning Diesel  fuel  and  cleaning  solvent  are  flammable  and  toxic  to  eyes,  skin,  and  respiratory  tract. Skin/eye  protection  required.    Avoid  repeated/prolonged  contact  to  prevent  serious  Injury  and death.  Good general ventilation is normally adequate. CAUTION Always use two wrenches when removing/installing fittings and/or fuel lines to avoid damage. CAUTION Never steam clean or pour cold water on a fuel injection pump while pump is running or while it is warm.  Doing so may cause seizure of internal rotating pump parts. NOTE Catch fuel in suitable container. a. If not removed, disconnect electrical leads to fuel injection pump. b. Clean fuel injection pump, lines,, and area around pump with dry cleaning solvent (P-D-680) or a steam cleaner. c. Using center bolt on harmonic balancer, rotate crankshaft until No.  1 piston is at TDC on compression stroke. NOTE The injection pump can be removed without engine being positioned at No.  1 TDC, however, this aids installation if pump position is not changed. d. Remove timing hole cover plate from side of fuel injection pump housing and check timing marks. (1) If there is a mark on cam ring and governor weight retainer, proceed with removal. (2) If there is no mark on governor weight retainer, scribe a mark on weight retainer (front mark) directly in line with mark on cam ring (rear mark). (3) Remove capscrew from left side of flywheel housing to gain access to timing hole in flywheel and insert locking pin (JDE-81-4), refer to FIGURE 3-42. 3-79
